The Devil's Arithmetic By: Jane Yolen
(Chapters 1-10)
The Devil's Arithmetic starts off in WWII when the Nazis put the Jewish people into concentration camps. Anyways, the book starts off with Hannah Stern going to the Cedar dinner in New Rochelle, NY. Hannah brought her brother, Aaron, and her parents. She arrives at the dinner and she isn't hungry. Hannah messes with Aaron and Hannah wonders why Grandpa Will is so weird. Her grandpa lets her drink wine. Next thing you know, Hannah is in a dark kitchen with a woman named Chaya. She has relatives like Shmuel, Gitl, and fai-fay-fayge? I'll get back to that later. Chaya starts speaking Hebrew. Shmuel is gonna get married so they start singing and dancing. Shmuel and some others talk to a Nazi. Shmuel reports that they're gonna be moved. The Nazi forces them to get on the ground where he takes their paperwork and jewelry. They're on the ground for hours and Hannah want's to go to America.
(Chapters 11-16)
They get in the boxcars. The ride lasted for four days and people died. They finally stop to drink dirty water. They get to the camps where this lady with three fingers tells them to pick out clothes. A man tattoos a number on Chaya and says that he had a daughter named Chaya. Later, Chaya gets woken up by a horn. She goes to eat and she meets a girl named Rivka. Later, they go and find Rivka again. They become friends. Rivka says her parents are dead besides her brother, Wolfe. Rivka basically says Lilith's Cave, NONO. Garbage Dump, yes. Chaya goes to the dump and saves a baby. She gives some guy extra bread. A Commandant will come for the "Choosing" where they kill underperforming workers. The Commandant wears size five in women's.
(Chapters 17-END)
Gitl has a plan to escape but doesn't tell Chaya. It gets messed up and her excuse is that she was going to pee. The Commandant comes for the "Choosing" and Shmuel, a violinist, and others are taken and chained up. They're about to be killed so they start praying, but Shmuel only says "Fayge." Fayge runs to Shmuel but gets caught in the gunfire. They all die. Some people come out of Lilith's Cave to take the bodies. One of the people is Rivka's brother, Wolfe. Soon later, Chaya and some other girls go to a water fountain where she prophecies about the death of six million Jewish people being portrayed in American movies. A Nazi walks up to the four girls and says he needs three more people to complete his load. He takes all the girls besides Chaya. Chaya takes Rivka's handkerchief that she has on her head and trades spots with Rivka. At the end it was one big dream and Wolfe is actually Grandpa Will. They changed their name to forget their past.
Regret is a big part of the book. Hannah regretted eating at her friend's house beforehand and Grandpa Will regrets his life as Wolfe. Regret is something you can't run from, just face. The faster you face and deal with regret, the sooner you can move on.
